The Art of the Service Break
Analysis • May 2026
In Head-to-Head leagues, matching up against a team that hits 100 aces a week can feel demoralizing. But smart managers know that raw power isn't the only way to win categories. The 'Service Break' (+3.0 points) and 'Break Points Saved' (+0.5 points) categories are often the true deciders of weekly matchups.
The Return Specialist's Value
Players who excel at returning serve might not generate massive ace totals, but they create a steady drip of high-value points. A single service break is worth six times the value of an ace. Drafting elite returners ensures you are competitive in the Break Points Converted and Total Games Won categories.
Clutch Performers: Break Points Saved
Some players bend but don't break. The 'Break Points Saved' stat rewards mental toughness. A player who faces 10 break points in a match and saves 8 of them generates +4.0 points just from defense. Look at ATP and WTA 'Under Pressure' leaderboards to find undervalued assets who rack up defensive points.
Surface Matters
Service breaks are far more common on clay and slow hard courts. When building your lineup for the European clay-court swing, bench your borderline servers and start your baseline defenders. The sheer volume of break point opportunities on slow surfaces will swing the matchup in your favor.
